This 2-day course introduces skills and knowledge you’ll need to investigate collisions with the goal of preventing future incidents. You will learn how to plan your company’s loss response, collect and interpret data on scene and away from the crash site, create scene sketches and verify incident reports, interview drivers and witnesses, and responsibly store the information you’ve collected.

  • Fundamentals of Collision Investigation: A brief overview of the who, what, and why of collision investigation.
  • Loss Response Plans: How to create and implement a comprehensive loss response plan for your organization.
  • Internal Data Collection and Retention: Guidelines for data collection and retention to obtain consistent information and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • On-Scene Data Collection: Collecting information at the site of the collision, including photographing the scene and interpreting tire marks.
  • Scene Diagrams, Measurements, and Calculations: Creating scene sketches, taking measurements, and using the traffic template and other calculations to check the validity of information provided or discern information not previously available.
  • Interview Techniques: Guidelines for collecting data by interviewing drivers, witnesses, and others whose input may help determine what happened in the collision and how to prevent future crashes.
  • Video Review: How you can use video to get a better understanding of the events of a collision.
  • Fundamentals of Collision Investigation: How to dig deeper into the information you have collected to find the root cause of a collision.
  • Review: A quick review of course resources, reinforcing the main points discussed over the past two days.
